The Daily Diabetic Foot-Check: A 2-Minute Habit That Prevents Big Problems

Diabetes can quietly reduce sensation and circulation in the feet — which means small injuries can go unnoticed and heal slowly. The defense is simple, free, and takes two minutes: look at your feet every day.

Your daily 2-minute check

  • Tops, soles, and between the toes — use a mirror or ask for help if you can't see the soles.
  • New redness, swelling, or warmth — early signs of pressure or infection.
  • Cuts, blisters, cracks, or drainage — anything that breaks the skin matters.
  • Color or temperature changes — one foot suddenly cooler or darker deserves a call.
  • Nail changes — thickening, ingrowing edges, or discoloration.

The rules that protect your feet

  • Never walk barefoot — even indoors.
  • Shake out your shoes before putting them on.
  • Wash and dry daily, especially between the toes; moisturize tops and soles (not between toes).
  • Don't self-treat corns, calluses, or ingrown nails with blades or acid pads.
  • Keep every scheduled foot exam — even when everything feels fine.

When to call us — same day

Any new wound, blister, redness that spreads, drainage, or a foot that's suddenly swollen or hot should be seen promptly. In diabetic feet, days matter. Small problems caught early stay small.
