Ankle sprains are among the most common injuries there are — and among the most commonly under-treated. 'Walk it off' works often enough that people assume it always works. Then, a year later, the ankle still swells after activity and gives way on uneven ground.
A sprain is a ligament injury. Ligaments that heal loose leave the ankle unstable, and each subsequent sprain stretches them further — a cycle that can end in chronic instability and early arthritis. The fix at the beginning is simple: proper support, a real rehab progression, and confirmation nothing more serious is hiding (fractures and tendon injuries mimic sprains regularly).
Mild sprains that improve quickly are fine to manage at home. Anything worse deserves imaging and a plan. Your ankles have to last a lifetime — treat the injury like it matters.
