Irritated, red toe caused by an ingrown toenail

Overview

Painful, red, and swollen along the edge of the nail? Ingrown toenails rarely resolve on their own — but they are one of the most treatable problems we see.

Most patients feel dramatically better within a day. If you've been living with a nail that hurts to walk on, you don't have to.

What to expect

Your care, step by step

  1. Numb & comfortableA quick local anesthetic means the procedure itself is painless.
  2. Precise correctionWe remove only the offending nail border — most visits take well under an hour.
  3. Prevent recurrenceWhen appropriate, we treat the nail root so the same edge won't grow back ingrown.
  4. Back on your feetSimple aftercare and you walk out the same day.

Our Approach: Fix It Once, Properly

An ingrown toenail is a small problem that behaves like a large one — it hurts disproportionately, it interferes with shoes and sleep, and it recurs relentlessly when treated halfway. The in-office procedure takes minutes: the toe is numbed thoroughly, the offending nail border is removed, and the area is dressed.

The part that determines whether you are back in six months is what happens to the nail root. A simple edge removal relieves pain now; a matrixectomy treats the nail matrix at that border so the sliver never regrows. It adds moments to the procedure and drops recurrence to a small fraction of cases. We will explain both options and let you choose with the recurrence numbers in front of you.

Recognizing the Signs: When Home Care Stops Being Enough

Warm soaks and loose shoes can settle a mild, early ingrown nail. Stop home treatment and be seen if the toe is red, swollen, draining, or increasingly painful, if you have tried and failed to resolve it more than once, or if it has been bothering you for more than a week or two.

Skip home treatment entirely if you have diabetes, peripheral neuropathy, or poor circulation. In those situations a minor nail problem is a genuine infection risk, and “bathroom surgery” with clippers is how small problems become serious ones.

Recovery: Back in Normal Shoes Within Days

Most patients walk out comfortably and return to normal shoes and activities within a day or two. There is a dressing to keep clean and dry for a short period, and mild soreness as the numbing wears off, but the relief from the original pain is typically immediate and dramatic.

The most common comment we hear afterward is that patients wish they had come in months earlier. If the nail root was treated, that border should not trouble you again; the nail itself narrows slightly, which most people never notice cosmetically.

Common questions

Ingrown Toenail Treatment — your questions, answered

Can I fix an ingrown toenail myself?
Home care — warm soaks, loose shoes — can settle a mild one. But 'bathroom surgery' with clippers usually makes it worse, and any ingrown nail that's red, swollen, draining, or recurring needs definitive treatment. With diabetes or poor circulation, skip home treatment entirely and call us.
Does the in-office procedure hurt?
The only uncomfortable part is the numbing injection, and we're deliberate about doing that gently. The procedure itself is painless, takes minutes, and most patients return to normal shoes and activities within a day or two — typically saying they wish they'd come in months earlier.
Will my ingrown toenail come back?
After a simple edge removal, it can. That's why we often recommend a matrixectomy — treating the nail root at the problem edge so that sliver never regrows. It adds moments to the procedure and drops recurrence to a small fraction of cases.
